Taxing Nightwood

A carnivorous tree native to Kimarel. It primarily grows along river banks, though its subspecies also show a surprising tolerance for brackish water, cropping up around the estuaries and islands of Kimarel's coastlines. Passing under its branches induces an illusion of darkness, disorienting the victim, and causing it to tangle itself among the grasping roots it extends from the riverbed (or seabed, as the case may be). Entire ships have been lost to the grasp of a fully grown nightwood, but fire can reliably fend it off. It can be recognized by its silver bark and dark leaves.
