Ghosts are a provably real phenomena in Enchiron. All souls pass on, eventually, but some resist it, for whatever reason they may have. Reasons can be anything, ranging from unfinished business and familial obligations to simple curiosity about the future, or a mere desire to rest before moving into the next life.
Visibility
Ghosts can see themselves and each other perfectly fine. They typically appear as they did when they died, or how they thought they felt. Their form very much reflects their perception of themselves. If they felt they had huge buckteeth all their life, then as a ghost, they indeed would have huge buckteeth, even if their teeth were more-or-less normal when alive. If it was a violent death, they typically still have those injuries. If they felt cold, they might be covered in ice. All those feelings they carried alive get taken to a logical extreme when they're ghosts.
Memento-bearers can sometimes see them, but not always. Their perception can be anywhere on the spectrum of total invisibility to total clarity, with most falling somewhere in the middle. Maybe they can only see part of the body, or maybe it's stretched, or maybe it's static-y, fuzzy, or blurry. Sounds made by the ghost can be similarly distorted.
Mediums tend to experience ghosts at the same spot on this spectrum. If one ghost is blurry to a medium, then all ghosts are blurry, with little exception. Some mediums don't perceive ghosts as humanoid at all, seeing only the way their magic threads into the land's.
When ghosts are upset or otherwise experiencing strong emotions, they can affect their environment and become visible to even ordinary people, albeit usually in a distorted way.
Deification
Many local, minor gods throughout Enchiron are believed to have been living people, once upon a time.
